(Verse)
I’ve wined and dined on Mulligan stew
And never wished for turkey As I hitched and hiked and drifted, too
From Maine to Albuquerque Alas, I missed the Beaux Arts Ball
And what is twice as sad I was never at a party where they honored Noel Ca’ad But social circles spin too fast for me My “hobohemia” is the place to be
(Chorus)
I get too hungry for dinner at eight I like the theater, but never come late I never bother with people I hate That’s why the lady is a tramp
I don’t like crap games with barons and earls Won’t go to Harlem in ermine and pearls Won’t dish the dirt with the rest of the girls That’s why the lady is a tramp
I like the free, fresh wind in my hair Life without care I’m broke, it’s oke Hate California, it’s cold and it’s damp That’s why the lady is a tramp
I go to Coney, the beach is divine I go to ballgames, the bleachers are fine I follow Winchell and read every line That’s why the lady is a tramp
I like a prize fight that isn’t a fake I love the rowing on Central Park lake I go to Opera and stay wide awake That’s why the lady is a tramp
I like the green grass under my shoes What can I lose, I’m flat, that’s that I’m alone when I lower my lamp That’s why the lady is a tramp
1. “Django” (John Lewis) 2. “One Bass Hit” (Dizzy Gillespie) 3. “La Ronde Suite” (Lewis) 4. “The Queen’s Fancy” (Lewis) 5. “Delauney’s Dilemma” (Lewis) 6. “Autumn In New York” (Vernon Duke) 7. “But Not for Me” (George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin) 8. “Milano” (Lewis)

1940: Sydney Bechet and his New Orleans Footwarmers:
If you are paying someone by the hour and you ask them to do something they think is unnecessary or foolish, they will say, “Well, it’s your nickel.” Let’s say you charter a fishing boat and you tell the captain, “Let’s fish off of North Point.” The captain might say, “Well, I’ve never had much luck there, but it’s your nickel.”
I put a nickel in the telephone, dialled my baby's number Got a brrr, brrr, brrr, brrr, busy line Each time I tried I got a busy tone Not my baby's number Just a brrr, brrr, brrr, brrr, busy line
Called his uncle in Jamaica Left a message with the baker Even checked the number in the telephone book Got so awfully, awfully worried To my baby's house I hurried When I looked inside, the phone was off the hook
And as I walked up to my baby - then I got my baby's number He was busy in the parlour doing fine Busy kissing someone else While I was keeping busy Getting a brrr, brrr, brrr, brrr, busy line

The French are glad to die for love They delight in fighting duels But I prefer a man who lives And gives expensive jewels
A kiss on the hand May be quite continental But diamonds are a girl's best friend A kiss may be grand But it won't pay the rental On your humble flat Or help you at the automat
Men grow cold As girls grow old And we all lose our charms in the end But square-cut or pear-shaped These rocks don't loose their shape Diamonds are a girl's best friend
Tiffany's! Cartier! Black Starr, Frost Gorham! Talk to me Harry Winston Tell me all about it!
There may come a time When a lass needs a lawyer But diamonds are a girl's best friend
There may come a time When a hard-boiled employer Thinks you're awful nice But get that ice or else no dice
He's your guy When stocks are high But beware when they start to descend It's then that those louses Go back to their spouses Diamonds are a girl's best friend
I've heard of affairs That are strictly platonic But diamonds are a girl's best friend And I think affairs That you must keep liaisonic Are better bets If little pets get big baguettes
Time rolls on And youth is gone And you can't straighten up when you bend But stiff back Or stiff knees You stand straight at Tiffany's
Diamonds! Diamonds! I don't mean rhinestones! But diamonds are a girl's best friend
Dogs are man's best friend.
