Give Me a Band and My Baby

“Big Girls Don’t Cry” の記事で 1956 年度のジャン=リュック・ゴダールのベストテン (カイエ・デュ・シネマ) にある リチャード・クワイン監督の『マイ・シスター・アイリーン』(My Sister Eileen) は、米国では 1955 年度の公開である。日本では劇場公開されておらず、DVD でようやく見ることができたものである。この作品はもともとは 1940 年に上演されたブロードウェイ・ミュージカルであり、映画化も 1942 年にされているので、リメークである (1942 年の方のロザリンド・ラッセルが出演している映画は見ていない、トレイラーは下)。

ボブ・フォッシーがこの作品のミュージカルの振り付けをしているが、フランク (Walgreens にある食堂のマネージャー) 役でも出演しており、この役を監督のリチャード・クワインがミュージカルと 1942 年の映画の両方で演じていたという。

アイリーン役はジャネット・リーだが、アンソニー・マン監督の『裸の拍車』(1953) にはすでに出演しているものの、オーソン・ウェルズ監督の『黒い罠』(1958) にも、アルフレッド・ヒッチコック監督の『サイコ』(1960) に出演する前である。

作品の中の “Give Me a Band and My Baby” の部分が印象的だったのでクリップを紹介しておく。ジャネット・リーとボブ・フォッシー以外の役者は、アイリーンの姉の役として、ベティ・ギャレット、新聞記者の役としてトミー ・ロールである。なお、ここには登場していないがジャック・レモンも出演している。

『陽気な街』(On the Avenue, 1937) を見て Alice Faye の魅力に惹かれたところなので、この映画の中で Dick Powell と歌うシーンがある Irving Berlin によるこのスタンダードを紹介する。実際、このスタンダードが初めて紹介されたのは 1937 年のこの映画であった。非常に多くのカバーがあるため紹介はごく一部に留まる。

How Much Is That Doggie in the Window

1953 年に発売された Patti Page のこのレコードは、8 週間ビルボードの首位を占め、レコードは二百万枚程売れたという。また飼い犬の登録は前年よりも 8 %上昇したそうである。オリジナルのレコードのジャケットには “Barks by Joe and Mac” と記されていた。

Duke of Earl

もともと歌っている Chandler が所属していた The Dukays でコーラスの練習をしていて “Do do do do...” とやっていたら、だんだんそれが “Du..du..du..Duke of Earl” というナンセンス語に変わってしまったという。Duke は公爵で Earl は 伯爵のことである (歌詞の中の Duchesse は公爵夫人)。なお、Earl Edwards という名前のメンバーがグループにいたそうである。1962 年に ビルボードで首位になった曲。歌っているときのコスチュームも荒唐無稽で素晴らしい。

で、この内 5番の『悪の対決』と エヴァ・ガードナーが出演している 9 番の『ボワニー分岐点』については日本語版の DVD はまだ出ていないと思う。特にロンダ・フレミングとアーレン・ダールという二人の赤毛女優を共演させたアラン・ドワン監督の『悪の対決』(Slightly Scarlet) が是非見てみたい。The Four Seasons の 1962 年のヒット曲のタイトル “Big Girls Don’t Cry” は、この映画の中の台詞が引用されたものらしい。

He Moved Through the Fair

大女優モーリン・オハラの歌は聞いたことがなかったんだけど、元歌手だったという母親譲りで歌も上手だなあ。アイルランド伝承の “She Moved Though the Fair” の she を he に変えて歌っている。許されなかった結婚であるにもかかわらず、恋人には結婚式は間近だからと告げ、多分新婚生活の準備のためにバザール (fair) で必要品を買い求めたのだろうか。そしてそれが最期で亡くなってしまうが、昨晩、その相手が亡霊となってやって来て、恋人に結婚式は間近だからと再び告げるという悲しい歌である。

Hushabye

これも Doc Pomus と Mort Shuman による曲。1959 年に作られて The Mystics によってレコーディングされた。日本語の「ねんねんころりよ」に相当する語が Hushabye である。1964 年に The Beach Boys もカバーしているので、それも一緒に紹介する。ビーチ・ボーイズの音楽のベースのひとつに、この当時の白人系の Doo-Wop があることはいまさらいうまでもない。

ついでというわけでもないが、hush という言葉からの連想で  Robert Aldrich 監督の映画『ふるえて眠れ』(Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte, 1964) を思い出すので Patti Page の歌も併せて紹介しておく。

Little Star

主にニューヨークのイタリア系のメンバーによって構成された Doo-Wop グループである The Elegants の名曲。“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” を翻案している。1958 年のリリースだが、57 年のオリジナル・デモの録音が残っていて、これがまた良い。

Next Door to an Angel

1962 年のニール・セダカの曲で、とりたてて良い曲だとは思わないんだが、ある日本の曲を思い出したので。歌詞の “I'm on cloud number nine.” は「天に昇ったような気分」という意味で使われる。“the lucky devil” は、「運のいい奴」と言う意味で、“the lucky dog” とかも使う。なお、Eden の発音は  /íːdn/、angel は /éɪndʒəl/ である。

バックがぶ厚い音楽って全然駄目で凡庸さしか感じないので、フィル・スペクターなんかはポピュラー音楽をつまらなくした歴史的元凶ではないかと疑っているのだが、The Crystals のこの 1963 年の曲はもともと簡潔であり、単純に楽しいので好きである。下のリミックス版が良いと思う。

This Year’s Kisses

1937 年、ロイ・デル・ルース監督の映画 “On the Avenue” の中の曲として、Irving Berlin が作った曲。日本では1937年12月に『抓って頂戴』という素晴らしい題名で封切られたものの、当局の注意を受けて『陽気な街』という残念な名称に改題されている。こんなくだらない注意をするのは、当時のファシズム体制しかないと思っていたが、最近の日本はだんだん当時を馬鹿にできなくなっているのだから怖い。

この映画見たことがないので、是非見てみたい。幸い DVD が出ている。振付はシーモア・フェリクスだし、出演は、ディック・パウエル、マデリーン・キャロル、アリス・フェイ、リッツ・ブラザーズなど豪華である。マデリーン・キャロルはアルフレッド・ヒッチコックの英国時代の『三十九夜』に出演していたあの女優である。ディック・パウエルはもともとクルーナーとして有名だった。

ここであげている、ビリー・ホリデイの演奏にはレスター・ヤングがテナーで参加しているが、この曲こそがこのコンビによる最初のレコーディングなのである。おまけに、ベニー・グッドマンやベイシー楽団の錚々たる顔ぶれがセッションに参加している。

最後に、歌詞の “This year's crop of kisses don't seem as sweet to me” で “don’t” なのはポピュラー音楽ではよくあること。曲のリズムにのせるためであると思っている。

This Magic Moment

1959 年の終わりに録音され、1960 年の初めにBen E. King のリードで The Drifters のシングルとしてリリースされた。作詞は、Doc Pomus 、作曲は Mort Shuman である。良い曲だなぁ。Jay and the Americans の方がヒットしたらしいし、他のアーティストもたくさんカバーしてるけど、どう聞いても僕の耳には The Drifters のものが素晴らしく聞こえる。

クリーブランドの郊外の女子高校生が結成したのが “The Poni-Tails” で彼女達が 19 歳のときの可憐な曲である。

Johnny Angel

最初下のクリップ見ていても全然ピンとこなかったんだが、そうか、これが日本でも『うちのママは世界一』というタイトルでテレビ放映された “The Donna Reed Show” なんだとようやく得心した。Shelley Fabares は Donna Reed の娘役だったのである。

美しい女優ドナ・リードは、もちろんフランク・キャプラ監督の『素晴らしき哉！ 人生』(It’s a Wonderful Life, 1946)でジェームズ・スチュワートの奥さん役として有名だが、個人的にはジョン・フォード監督の『コレヒドール戦記』(They Were Expendable, 1945) で、ドナ・リードがジョン・ウェイン (役名はラスティ) の軍帽を「ラスティ!」と呼んで投げて、その投げられた帽子をウェインが受け止めるところがあって、そこから二人の愛が始まるのだが、このシーンは本当に素晴らしくて記憶に残っている。
