日本の歴史で唯一ジャズが音楽の中でもっとも聞かれ芸能界の稼ぎ頭であった頃、もっとも人気があった。オリジナル・メンバーは、ジョージ川口(ds), 松本英彦(ts), 小野満(b), 中村八大(p)。結成された 1953 年の音源。

次のラジオ音源は1957年でベースが上田剛に代わっている。司会はロイ・ジェームス！E・H・エリックとともにテレビでおなじみだった。成瀬巳喜男監督の『浮雲』(1955) にアメリカ兵の役で出ていたが、ルーツはロシア革命で日本に亡命したタタール人であったそうである。Kotobukiya presents とあるが、サントリーの旧社名は壽屋である。

Wikipedia の杜撰さなど今に始まったことではないが、サラ・ヴォーンの若い頃の記述は、

1940 年代にデビュー。1947 年に “It's Magic” が初めてのヒット曲となり、大型新人として注目を集めた。

だけである！まず、“It’s Magic” は録音は 1947年 12 月 27 日であり、ヒットしたのは 1948 年であるという基本的なところから間違えている。それにヒット・チャート入りしたということが大事ならば、“Tenderly” の方が先である。ビッグバンドがまだ華やかで歌手はバンドの専属として歌っていた時代にレコードのヒットで始めて「大型新人として注目を集めた」ということがありえるのかという疑問はおいておくにしても、これ以前の Sarah Vaughan の歌はどこに消えていったのだろう。「ビバップのスタイルを歌唱に活かした」と書くならば、1948 年以前のビバップにとって重要な時期をあっさり省略すれば、その記述は単なる抽象に過ぎなくなると思わないのだろうか。

というわけで、Wikipedia の紋切り型記述に従うならば、「大型新人として注目を集める」 1947 年以前の Sarah Vaughan の曲を自分の耳で聴くことにする。

Passing Strangers

音楽

1950 年代後半以降から今日に至るまで「アメリカ的なもの」をどうも信用する気になれない。というか、20 年代から 40 年代の時期のアメリカはやはり二度とない世界史の奇跡なのかもしれない。1957 年のこの美しい曲がビルボードで最高 82 位ってことがあるかよと思ってしまう。歌っているのはビリー・エクスタインとサラ・ヴォーンだぞ。ちなみに、16 位だった “Jailhouse Rock” のリズムセクションのダサさを聞いてみて欲しい。

自国が誇るべき豊かな文化であった音楽や映画を平気で無視し虐殺した「アメリカ的な」感性などどうして信用できようか。
