The Marvelettes の “Please Mr. Postman” を聞いていると、そいういえば、デトロイトのモータウン歴史博物館の前で夕方、記念写真を撮ったことがあることを思い出したが、なぜ、そこに行ったのか、どうも詳細が蘇ってこない。ただ、車の運転手が荒廃してしまったデトロイトを嘆いていたことだけは覚えている。“Please Mr. Postman” のもともとのレコーディングはギターの伴奏さえないし、ジャケットにしたところで歌っているアーティストの写真やイラストさえないシンプルなものだ。それって、黒人の歌が白人に受け入れられやすくするための配慮でもあったのだろうか？
というわけで、もう一曲、Motown の代表曲である The Supremes の 1966 年の曲『恋はあせらず』(You Can’t Hurry Love) を取り上げてみた。和洋を問わず、これを下敷きにしている曲ってかなりあると思う。なお、YouTube で一番アクセスが多いクリップは歌詞を途中で間違えて挽回しているところがあり、使用しなかった。
