1943 年の Nat King Cole のヒット曲。タイトルは辞書にも「いい加減な気持ちを捨ててまっとうになる」という意味で出ている会話表現だが、もちろんこの曲からきている。この表現は “straighten up” だけでも使われる。
straighten の最後の子音の連続は “Buttons and Bows” と同じで鼻腔解放である。/n/ さえ発音できれば自然にリンキングする。monkey の o は /ʌ/ で 語末の ey は、money と同じ /ɪ/である。綴り ei, ey を /eɪ/ と読むのは英単語の中で数 % あるかないかである。なお /eɪ/ と読むもっとも多い綴り は、“a” でその次は “ai” である。また、文字 e を /eɪ/ と発音する場合がある。その場合はフランス語に対応しているものが多い。
